- Growth financing to expand global reach and product range
Mountain Cleantech Fund II (MCF II) has invested in Pessl Instruments GmbH (www.metos.at), one of the global leaders in the fast growing precision agriculture industry.
Pessl Instruments (PI), which is headquartered in Weiz, Austria, was founded in 1984 by current CEO Gottfried Pessl. The firm develops and distributes climate monitoring, agricultural risk – and irrigation management technology solutions for its farming customer base. PI´s products, which are globally distributed under the ´Metos®´ brand, include weather stations, soil moisture monitoring devices, irrigation automation controllers, electronic insect traps, remote crop monitoring systems and localized weather forecasts. Farmers can access and evaluate the data generated by PI´s varied monitoring systems via the cloud-based ´Fieldclimate®´ web platform. PI is currently developing a number of additional, potentially disruptive, products, such as mobile onsite soil nutrient analysis devices, which will enter the market shortly. PI aims to become the leader in Internet-of-Things (IoT) solutions for the agriculture sector.
PI´s products are helping farmers to increase crop yields, save energy, water and fertilizer costs. In emerging markets like Africa, Latin America or Asia, PI´s products can improve rural connectivity and provide farmers and stakeholders with cost effective specific real time information tailored to their daily challenges in farming (´when, where and how much´).
Jürgen Habichler, Managing Director at Mountain Cleantech AG, who will also chair the board of directors of PI comments: “The global Precision Agriculture industry is poised for significant growth, underpinned by powerful market drivers like increasing crop production requirements, limited arable land and accelerating adoption, triggered primarily through the emergence of smart phones and tablet computers. With its extensive product range and installed base of 15’000 weather stations, Pessl Instruments is well positioned to address the growing technology needs of farmers around the globe”.
Daniel Koppelkamm, Principal at Mountain Cleantech and Agriculture Technology (AgTech) sector expert adds: “Our financing will help the company to further cement its strong market position in its existing focus markets such as the Americas and Africa. The funding will also support the development of additional product classes such as onsite soil nutrient– and animal behaviour analysis.”
Gottfried Pessl, Founder and CEO of PI comments: “We are very pleased to partner with Mountain Cleantech, one of the leading European sustainable technology growth investors. Given Mountain Cleantech’s successful track record in building global businesses, we intend to expand our product range, penetrate new markets and make Pessl Instruments the leading Internet of Things (IoT) player for plant and animal monitoring”.
